Tropical Ceramics

Back to work after half term and this week I am looking at the link between illustration and ceramics. More and more illustrator’s and pattern designers are turning their hand to pottery. Whether that is working alongside ceramists or learning themselves. Taking an idea from a 2D pattern and applying it to a 3D object can throw up lots of problems. Often it can end up looking cheap and the essence of the illustration is lost. Here I have looked at tropical. This season it is darker and more dense than previous seasons. However, this doesn’t need to apply to ceramics. Adding in speckled textures, breaking up the pattern and just using elements can help to break up heaviness when building your collection. Playing around with scale and technique makes sure that it doesn’t look to dated and lets the texture of the clay shine through.
